Desktop Computer Store. Best Desktop Computers:

Choosing the best home and office desktop PCs

This desktop computer store site should make things easier to buy your first desktop, whether for home or business use.
Bear in mind that all components mentioned here will (because of developing technology), change price and specification rapidly. For example graphics cards, hard drive sizes and processor speeds, but the general points will remain the same.

How to find the best office and home desktop computers

A PC for the office (home or work) actually doesn’t need to be pricey. A budget end desktop can easily do pretty much everything you will need it to. Apart from maybe playing 3D games, video editing and higher end multimedia work, a mere $750 can give you a very useable PC.

For that (as at the beginning of 2009) you can expect a processor along the lines of a Sempron 2400, an Athlon XP 3200+, even a lower-end Athlon 64 chip. From Intel, then probably at least a Pentium 4 2.6GHz. That’s more than enough for office tasks, for playing DVDs and for using the internet.

In this price bracket, expect CRT screen as opposed to a thin TFT, and you’ll be looking for 512MB of RAM (256MB minimum).

A 60GB hard drive would be the norm and you will also expect to get a CD burner, speakers, keyboard and mouse.

Free scanners and printers are the very often false economies. You can’t expect great performance, cheap printers use ink by the bucket load. So budget for whichever device you need and choose it properly.

Savings will be in graphics processing. 3D games will require additional upgrades.

Most desktop computer packages have a built-in modem, USB 2.0 ports, a built in sound device and networking facilities.

If you want a family desktop computer then usually you compromise to some extent and will want a PC that can deal with 3D gaming for the younger family members. (But don’t forget that a games console will be a cheaper and possibly better buy for gaming). Your PC will do everything else the budget machines above can do.

In the $750 - $1000 price bracket you should expect a 3GHz+ processor, a DVD writer, a 17 inch TFT screen and 512MB of RAM. A 120GB hard disk should be standard, very useful for videos, MP3 music and movie trailer downloads.

You’ll also get better graphics card at this price. Compatible with modern 3D games for at least a year or so. You should also get a reasonable software bundle, with an operating system, anti-virus software, DVD player and possibly office software as well.

Home entertainment desktops.

These can play all sorts of entertainment media and you can expect to pay $1500+, but you will normally end up with a desktop computer thatis very limited apart from home entertainment. If this is for you however then get the Media Center Edition version of Windows XP, and it will be easy to use.

Gaming On Desktop Computers

The real money is spent on gaming systems. PC gamers usually spend more time and money than console gamers. If you buy a $500 - $600 graphics card for your PC then that will give you technology that games won’t fully utilise for probably a year or two.

High end PCs aren’t just about the graphics card, so the price will still be around the $1500 mark. You’ll get a hard drive of 250GB or more in capacity, and a bare minimum of 512MB of RAM (usually 1GB).

And yet it’s still possible to get more.

Remember - much like buying a new car, your PC drops in value quickly, and while it won’t be outdated the second you buy it, you don’t have long to wait for the next must-have advance.

Here are a few more tips

- Don’t be fooled by looks. A cheap PC in a nice case will never be as good as a nice PC in the cheap case!

- If you can’t find an off-the-shelf machine that suits you, ask your desktop computer store for quotes on one of their custom desktop computers - designed to your unique specifications. Most firms will be very happy to do this for you.

One of the easiest upgrades is adding extra RAM. See the video below.
